Robbie Fulks has “Gone Away Backward”

by Dan Bloom, producer

When you speak with musician and songwriter Robbie Fulks, you get the feeling that his wheels are always turning. His lyrics are intelligent, evocative, and often a little depressing, but while singing through a wry smile and backed by top class players, he always keeps you on his side.

When last we visited with Robbie Fulks, he was toting his first live album, titled “Revenge!” A live recording was a natural choice for Fulks, whose concerts are known to be a rollicking good time replete with a healthy amount of banter between the band and the crowd. Fulks even plays weddings. In fact, former executive producer of this program Steve Lickteig had the pleasure of Fulks and his band performing at his wedding reception in Masachusetts. Most of the staff was in attendance and it was a fantastic night that none of us will soon forget.

Fulks finances the recording of his albums on his own and then inks the record deals afterwards, an arrangement that allows him complete creative control. For a man who has done a Michael Jackson cover CD and experimented with rock n roll, Fulks’ latest offering is a return to more traditional country and bluegrass sounds.  “Gone Away Backward” is released on Bloodshot Records, and whether on record on in concert, Robbie Fulks is always worth a listen.
