Doyle McManus: gay marriage before the Supreme Court

by Ariana Pekary, producer

This week, eyes across the nation were focused on the Supreme Court as it took up two cases related to gay marriage.  Doyle McManus is Washington columnist for the Los Angeles Times.  He says the two cases won’t necessarily be decided the same way.  Here are some of the articles he discussed this week.

Politico breaks down how the Justices are likely to vote on gay marriage based on past votes.

One of the people attending the Prop 8 arguments is a gay cousin of John Roberts.

The lawyer arguing against Prop 8 (i.e., defending gay marriage) is a longtime conservative, who served under Reagan.

More than 130 conservatives have signed an affidavit in support of gay marriage and so it’s hard not to note the difference between what’s happening here and France where large anti-gay marriage protests erupted this week.

Public opinion may be shifting here on the issue of gay marriage, but still not on abortion.

There is a split between people who think that the ideology of the Supreme Court has shifted right or left.

President Obama named a woman as the new Secret Service director, the first woman in the agency’s history.

Another first, a woman has been acting as head of the CIA’s clandestine service and would also be the first women in that position.  She also has links to torture.

Marco Rubio gave a speech this week in Bob’s home state of Kentucky.  In it, Rubio made the case for American military might, distancing himself from Rand Paul

Michele Bachmann is facing a congressional ethics investigation.  A national field coordinator says PAC funds were used to pay campaign staff, a no-no in Washington.

The Washington Post and ABC released a poll this week.  57% of people view Obama favorably – and 56% of Latinos have a favorable view of congress, believe it or not.
