Peter Gomes was the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard’s Divinity School for more than 30 years. He was also an openly gay, African-American Baptist minister who was a registered Republican for most of his life. Gomes was also the author of several books including The Good Book, The Scandalous Gospel of Jesus, Sermons and Strength for the Journey. Gomes held independent views on everything from the morality of war to same-sex marriage and he shared those views with Bob in a conversation recorded in 2005. To remember the late professor, we’re replaying a portion of that interview, which covered the religious and cultural divide in America. Peter Gomes died on February 28th at the age of 68.
