Dailey and Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers

by Chad Campbell, senior producer

I had never heard of Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent, and bluegrass is not my favorite genre of music, but I did grow up listening to the Statler Brothers. My parents had a rotation of three cassette tapes in the car stereo, greatest hit collections of Simon and Garfunkel, Rod Stewart and the Statler Brothers. The group was based in Staunton, Virginia — had one pair of brothers, but it turned out that no one in the band was named Statler. They are in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Hall of Fame and the Country Music Association named the Statlers best vocal group a record NINE times. The Statlers retired in 2002, but now there’s Dailey and Vincent’s tribute album, which effortlessly transforms 12 Statler Brother country hits into bluegrass toe-tappers. The CD is available exclusively at Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores (click here to find a location near you). 1. My wife and I are big fans of Dailey & Vincent, and we bought the Statler Brothers Tribute CD at our local Cracker Barrel. It has some great songs on it. My favorite song on this CD is Do You Know You are my Sunshine and my wife’s favorite is Elizabeth. Even better than the album is seeing their live performance. It has been our priviledge to see D&V at a couple of Adams & Anderson Bluegrass Festivals and most recently at a performing arts center in Bowdon, GA. We loved their new band line-up and all their antics.

The audience participation is great and it is fun when Parker, Jamie and Darrin come out in the audience like some sort of Las Vegas crooners flirting with the ladies.

The Statler Bros tribute CD kind of makes us wonder, is there a chance of genre crossing or will D&V stick with what they do best, which in my opinion is traditional bluegrass and gospel singing. My favorite CD remains their first release, probably because I saw one of their very first performances of The Mark and I Believe, definitely two of their best songs when you see Dailey & Vincent perform live.
