The 40th anniversary of what was billed as “An Aquarian Exposition” is this weekend. Greg Walter worked on the backstage crew of Woodstock 40 years ago and came away with more than his share of stories, which he includes in Woodstock: A New Look. The book is also filled with the candid photographs he shot during the festival of the performers and of the half a million people in the audience.
One of those photographs is a shot of the massive crowd in a muddy field. Some are walking past, some are standing still, some are looking up and one is completely naked. Woodstock for me was just tragic as I was going in the opposite direction of everyone else. I lived on 80th & 3rd in Manhattan and happened to have booked myself Eastern Air from Newark to Melbourne, Florida the day before to return to college. My entire walk down Manhattan, bus through to Newark, walk to my gate and even for the layover in Atlanta all I saw were my "people" walking the other way with big smiles on their faces. There were mobs of people headed in and I was headed out. I've always regretted it. My sister and I left the apartment together, she went to Woodstock and just blew her mind with joy. Drat.
Good show about Woodstock. I was there one week early and saw the whole event slowly happen. Ever since then I have looked for photos of the playground, my favorite place to hangout other than the Hog Farm Free Stage.
