Covers from the American Folklife Center

Steven Winick and Todd Harvey are folklife specialists with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Today, they shared old folk tunes that have been covered by contemporary artists. Here’s a list:

-Sea Lion Woman performed by Christine and Katherine Shipp and Feist.

-Rock Island Line performed by Kelly Pace and Lonnie Donegan.

-Gallows Pole performed by Lead Belly and Led Zeppelin.

-Trouble So Hard performed by Vera Hall, which is sampled in Natural Blues by Moby.

  1. I absolutely love your show, and was one of the millions who was relieved to find you on PRI after the NPR debacle. Anyway, just a short comment on the folk music show this morning, which for the most part was fascinating: there is yet another (near-perfect, IMO) cover of "See Line Woman" done by Randy Crawford/Joe Sample on the CD "Feeling Good" which was released on 8/1/06 (before Feist’s "The Reminder" CD, which I also love; released on 5/1/07, title of subject track on that CD is "Sealion".)

Randy Crawford had one big hit in the 60’s or 70’s (memory fading..over 50 syndrome…) called "Street Life". NOW THAT is a song you could weave into a discussion of Pres-elect Obama, because if ANYONE can do anything about "street life", he is OUR MAN !! But listen to it first to become convinced.
    Thanks you & Kind Regards,

  2. I have been a fan of folk music and it’s modern covers since I was a child listening to my parents old Bob Dylan and Joan Baez records.I find it exciting to hear programs like this. It lets me know that others are interested in our musical heritage and the way it influences all popular music. Great segment. Keep up the good work. You have gained a fan in me. Sincerly, Scott Rubin
