HOUR ONE:
Journalist James Nestor was on assignment in Greece when he saw a man dive 300 feet below the ocean’s surface on a single breath of air. When the man returned four minutes later, Nestor decided to learn all he could about freedivers – who rely on their lungs instead of artificial breathing equipment. Nestor’s interest in humans with amphibious abilities turned into a book, Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves.
On December 26, 2004, Sonali Deraniyagala and her family—her parents, husband and two sons—were wrapping up their vacation on the coast of Sri Lanka. A tsunami swept the whole family away, killing all but Deraniyagala. Her book, Wave, tells her personal story or grief and recovery – and represents the nearly quarter million people killed that day.
HOUR TWO:
WNYC’s Radiolab is now in its 12th season of new episodes. Bob talks with hosts Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad about where the idea for the experimental public radio show came from, what they try to do with each new program, and how they’d like to see it grow. In 2010 Radiolab won a Peabody Award and a year later, Abumrad was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” grant.
Bob talks to Mac McCaughan about running a very successful independent record label and heading up two bands that are darlings of college radio. McCaughan is a co-founder of North Carolina’s Merge Records, which marks its 25th year in 2014 – and his two bands are Superchunk and Portastatic.
