“Sing to the Moon” with Laura Mvula

by Dan Bloom, producer

When Laura Mvula performed in New York last month, a group of my friends attended the concert and walked out in awe. They told me that this powerful British singer commanded the stage with beautiful songs, backed by top class musicians, and that she bantered with the crowd like she owned the place. With such a glowing review, I had to hear Mvula’s music for myself.

Sure enough, her album “Sing to the Moon” is a bona fide masterpiece, achieving a rare feat in this era of disposable pop music…it sounds original. Mvula’s time at the Birmingham Conservatoire clearly served her well, with choral and orchestral traditions fitting snugly alongside her deep singing and songwriting talent. The result is a debut album that is soaring, funky and profound. “Sing to the Moon” has been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, givin annually to the top album from the UK & Ireland.

Luckily, those of us unfortunate souls who have still not seen Laura Mvula in concert will not have to wait much longer for her return to North America. Here is a list of upcoming tourdates:
