This Weekend’s Program

Bob Edwards Weekend Highlights – December 8-9, 2012

HOUR ONE:

Los Angeles Times columnist Doyle McManus joins Bob to discuss the latest political news.

David Von Drehle has pinpointed 1862 as “the most eventful year in American history.” He writes about it in his new book Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America’s Most Perilous Year. Drehle is the editor-at-large at TIME magazine and also the author of Triangle: The Fire That Changed America.

Then, the latest installment of our ongoing series This I Believe.  We’ll hear from essayist Tanuj Bansal about the stresses and joys of in-laws getting to know each other after a contentious marriage.

HOUR TWO:

We remember jazz legend Dave Brubeck.  His hit “Take Five” became a jazz standard and the bestselling jazz song of all time.  In 2005, Bob talked with Brubeck about his life, music career and military service. Dave Brubeck died Wednesday at the age of 91.

Bob sits down for a performance chat with pianist Chad Lawson.  He’s an award-winning pianist and his latest CD is titled The Piano.  Lawson plays a solo piece as well as several other songs and improvisations with his current trio, Jim Brock on percussion and Mike Holstein on bass. Lawson also reflects on what it’s like to be an independent artist trying to make a career in today’s music world.
