When she was young, her father gave his kids frequent speeches about the importance of perseverance. What surprised her as an adult was how much he lived his “never give up” message toward her when she needed him the most. Hackett is a writer, and an adjunct English professor at the University of Cincinnati. Her novel, Proof of Heaven, was published in 2011. She lives in Cincinnati with her husband and two children. Hackett’s essay appears in the collection, This I Believe: On Fatherhood.
