essayist Kathy HeffernanEach week, we’ll hear a new This I Believe essay – this time from Kathy Heffernan. Her son, Sam, struggled through elementary school. But his sixth grade teacher took the time to encourage Sam’s strengths and inspired him to be a better student. Her reward was a Valentine’s Day box of chocolates. Heffernan believes all children deserve such a loving, dedicated teacher. Heffernan herself is a special education teacher in Missoula, Montana, where she lives with her husband and three children. They have also helped raise three grown foster sons.
