Verlon Thompson

by Chad Campbell, senior producer

I know many of you don’t share Bob’s taste in music, but I hope you’ll give his conversation with this Americana singer-songwriter a chance. It’s almost a crime that American Idol also-rans and flavor of the month pop stars are more well known than such a true and humble talent as Verlon Thompson. What little I knew about him was from his association with Guy Clark (see the next blog entry), but Thompson deserves to be a star on his own. In the interview, he says he was never very good at the business side of show business … that writing and playing songs is just something he loves to do. It certainly shows, in this performance chat with Bob and on Verlon Thompson’s latest solo CD titled Works.

Here’s a video of Thompson performing The Guitar, which he co-wrote with Guy Clark.

  1. I loved the interview and hope to have it available soon on podcast (?) so I can share it with my wife.

I am fascinated by the pure love of music that truly influences the phenomenal artistic talent Mr. Thompson shares with us. This music is as true to "American made" as apple pie or baseball. The Works CD will be a perfect anniversary gift for the wife next month.

Thank you Verlon & Bob for making my life happier.

  2. I have to say, Mr. Thompson's writing is what is best about country music – heartfelt, true, finely crafted – all things most of what comes from Gnashville these days seems to be missing.

Add in his guitar playing… now there's a total package.

I just wish I wrote as well as what he throws away.

  3. I share Bob's taste in music. I was familiar with Guy Clark but not so with Verlon Thompson. I'm 57 and have heard a lot of music in my life. Today's show was a revelation to me. It's been a long time since an artist has caught my attention so forcefully.

My XM subscription is coming due. Shows like this one are a big reason why I'll renew.
