Joe and Terry GraedonIn the interest of full disclosure, Joe and Terry Graedon hired me for my first real job in the world of public radio. On Saturday mornings in the fall of 1993, I started helping run the board and answer the phone for their live call-in show The People’s Pharmacy. As a young, relatively healthy college student, topics like heart disease and macular degeneration didn’t hold my interest, but the Graedon’s honesty, warmth and husband-wife interactions did. They truly co-hosted their show, were genuinely nice people and in retrospect, looked and sounded like prototypical public radio types. In this interview, notice how they even “co-guest” during the conversation with Bob.

In addition to their popular radio show, the Graedons also write a weekly syndicated newspaper column (click here for the archive) and have co-authored more than a dozen books. Bob talked with them about their latest The People’s Pharmacy Quick & Handy Home Remedies. It includes safe, easy and cheap treatments for ailments like asthma, allergies and acne – concerns like constipation – and worries such as warts. The book also features 24 of the Graedon’s “Favorite Foods” – fruits, vegetables, nuts and spices with proven health benefits such as blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, pomegranate, garlic, ginger, almonds and broccoli. The end of the book even discusses three different diets you can follow to gain certain health benefits and features a few tempting recipes.

Bob also spoke with Joe and Terry’s daughter about her debut novel. The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon comes out in paperback today.
