John Buchanan and This I Believe

essayist Rev. John BuchananEach week, we’ll hear a new This I Believe essay – this week by the Reverend Dr. John M. Buchanan. He is pastor of Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church and the editor/publisher of The Christian Century magazine. Rev. Buchanan has received numerous doctorates and honors, has held several board memberships, and has written three books. To write this essay, he found inspiration in the Declaration of Independence and the Bible. Rev. Buchanan believes everyone is equal since we’re all created in God’s image. He sees his belief affirmed in how the community has embraced his developmentally disabled grandchild and how she has thrived despite her disability.

  1. I'm always astounded that it's often quoted and actually believed that "all men are created equal" and it's quoted here in this interview. What is even more amazing is that his grandchild has down's syndrome and yet she was created equal. We are not created equal because some are created more equal than others. Take a look at the photos of black men hanging from trees in Alabama and ask yourself if they had life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Have a look at a 30 year old with microencephally(sp?) and ask yourself if he has been created as equally as you. God favors some over others. The phrase is pure idealism and isn't at all realistic. Sorry TJ but you're wrong.
