Each week, we’ll hear a new This I Believe essay – this week by Johnnie Barmore. She lives in Cincinnati where she works as a community-based mental health therapist with children. She says her biggest challenge is getting abused kids to trust her enough to talk. Barmore’s favorite method is to take them fishing. It reminds her of the countless hours she spent with her father on the banks of a pond or a river, playing while he fished, and letting the comfort of their connection grow. Johnnie Barmore believes fishing is a relaxing recreational pastime, a source of delicious food and a valuable distraction from the painful challenges of life.
