The interesting thing about Charles Ferguson as a documentary filmmaker is his willingness to challenge the people he’s interviewing onscreen. “Inside Job” isn’t about so-called “gotcha” journalism. It’s about asking the government officials and business leaders who made financially risky decisions to own up to their mistakes — and in some cases, their deception. “Inside Job” is about the financial collapse of 2008, and the regulatory factors that allowed Wall Street to make millions of dollars from worthless mortgages by simultaneously selling them as investments, and betting that those investments would fail. Ferguson acknowledges that it’s impossible to prevent people on Wall Street from bending the rules or committing outright fraud. He’d just like to see them punished for it, as with the Savings and Loan scandal.
