Carl Hiaasen

by Chad Campbell, senior producer

Carl Hiaasen is a Florida native and a long-time columnist for the Miami Herald. Click here to read some of his recent columns. He’s also a very successful novelist, which he considers hard work compared with writing his columns. Hiaasen has published 12 now and his latest pokes fun at the celebrity culture so generally popular in this country and specifically popular in South Beach and Miami. That’s the setting for Star Island, which follows the exploits of Cherry Pye, a young, washed-up, strung-out pop star; the look-alike actress hired to appear as Cherry when she’s too drunk to attend parties; a fictitious former Florida governor now known as Skink; and an obsessed paparazzo named Bang Abbott.
