Dan Gediman, Arthur Morgan and This I Believe

Each week Bob is joined by Dan Gediman, the Executive Director of This I Believe, Inc. to discuss one of the original essays from the 1950s radio series. This week’s featured essay is by Arthur Morgan. He was a self-taught civil engineer, as well as an educator, a writer of more than 20 books, and a labor arbiter. Morgan served as the first chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and as president of Antioch College in Ohio. Morgan’s essay speaks to his belief that a purposeful life is best supported by the free inquiry of thought. The Antioch College president cautions that loose living warps thinking to justify itself. 1. I’d like to point out to listeners that Antioch is not the only educational institution where Arthur Morgan’s vision lives on. In 1962 Arthur’s son Ernest and his wife Elizabeth started the Arthur Morgan School in rural Western North Carolina http://www.arthurmorganschool.org/ . AMS today provides a unique living/learning experience for boarding and day student in 7th, 8th and 9th grades.
