Each week Bob is joined by Dan Gediman, the Executive Director of This I Believe, Inc. to discuss one of the original essays from the 1950s radio series. This week’s featured essay is by Jackie Robinson. In 1947, he became the first African-American player in not only Major League Baseball but in all of American professional sports. Robinson was a talented player, but his character was given equal consideration in selecting him for this important task. He stoicly faced hatred and racism on and off the field and was named Rookie of the Year in 1947. Two years later, he was voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player. Athletic accomplishments aside, Robinson played a tremendous role in the fledgling civil rights movement and helping to bring about a more equal and just America.
