Adam Yauch is one-third of the legendary hip hop group the Beastie Boys, he’s the founder of his own film production and distribution company (Oscilloscope Labs) and he’s a well known advocate for the Free Tibet movement. You’ll learn all this by listening to Adam Yauch on The Bob Edwards Show, but the you’ll also learn something that makes him seem very much like a regular guy: Yauch loves basketball and he plays in two regular pickup games a week.
That fact makes a lot of sense considering Yauch’s new film, titled: ‘Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot.’ It’s a documentary about elite high school basketball players, gathered to compete in an all-star game at Harlem’s famed Rucker Park. The documentary was filmed in 2006, and at that time, Yauch and his production team selected eight of the top high school players to profile in some depth. Now it’s two years later, and a number of those players, including Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, Donte Green and Jerryd Bayless are set to be drafted into the NBA, starting tonight at 7 PM in New York City.
‘Gunnin for that #1 Spot’ is an Adam Yauch project through and through, it’s clearly a tribute to things and places he loves: Basketball, New York City, Rucker Park, Hip Hop Music and the sheer creativity and physical genius of the best young ballers in the country.
